2018 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION REPORT

In 2018 the Christian Education committee continues to use Sparkhouse Publishing for our curriculum needs, specifically the Holy Moly series.  This year attendees were split into two groups for Sunday School, PreK-2 & 3-6; and the other classes offered were 7th & 8th Grade Confirmation; High School Youth Group; and Adult Bible Sunday.  The committee decided to try a new curriculum this year, so we are utilizing the series Holy Moly for PreK-6. The Holy Moly series consists of a two-year rotation, each year including stories from the New and Old Testaments, stories about Advent & Christmas, Holy Week & Easter, and Post-Resurrection.  Each story includes a key verse, video, reading from the Storybook Bible for PreK-2 and verses in the Connect Bible for 3-6; and lastly a create section.  Collaborate was selected for 7th and 8th grade confirmation.  Collaborate provides hands on investigative learning that leads to a deep engagement with the Bible, church history, and Lutheran theology.  Curriculum is divided into four categories: Bible: Old Testament; Bible: New Testament; Lutheran History & Catechism; and Lutheran Living.  Re:form was selected for the high school class.  Re:form is a youth ministry program consisting of 40 lessons that tackle questions about the Bible, creed, disciples, Jesus, other beliefs, and hot topics.  Lessons give students the tools to think critically, reflect, and discover.

Attendance Numbers

Christmas Program

This year’s Christmas Program was an Instant Christmas Pageant called, The Not-So-Silent Night.  The confirmation, high school and Sunday school participants pantomimed the entire program and sang along to traditional Christmas program songs throughout the pageant.  We were blessed with two solo musical performances during communion.

 First Communion

Nine students participated in the Holy Communion preparation class led by Pastor Cole and received their First Communion at worship on March 11, 2018.

 Confirmation

Six Confirmands were confirmed on April 15, 2018 by Pastor Cole and enjoyed a Confirmation Dinner held by the Council on April 11th.

Adult Bible Study

Meets weekly on Wednesday morning at 10:30am.  We generally have conversation around the upcoming Sunday’s gospel text and share in Holy Communion together.  Always looking for more to come and join us. You can come and go as your schedule allows.

Special Activities:

Backpack Blessing & Rally Sunday: On Sunday, August 19, 2018 students of all ages brought their backpacks to church to receive a blessing.  Each student received a special blessing and a tag with a prayer that could be placed on their backpack.  Rally

Sunday was held to kick off our Sunday School year.  During the Sunday service the Christian Education staff was installed, 3rd graders received their Adventure Bibles and bags given by WELCA, and 3-year olds were welcomed to their 1st year of Sunday School with a welcome bag.  Following the service everyone enjoyed hot dogs, chips, and bars while the kids played on inflatables set up outside that went with our theme: God’s Team.

Vacation Bible School 2018

This past summer Trinity hosted vacation Bible school with Estherville Lutheran and Redeemer Lutheran participating in the venture.  This is the first year all three Lutheran churches joined together to provide a religious and fun learning experience for Pre k through 6th grades.  Lutheran Lakeside provided the programming and staff.  Volunteers from all three churches provided assistance, food, and clean up.  The theme was Jesus Is A Game Changer.  Activities were Bible study, singing, skits, games, service project, and crafts.

A closing program and supper were held at the end of vacation Bible school event.  The three churches and personnel worked very well together for a successful venture.  We plan to continue this sharing and cooperative effort in the future.

JUMP

Jesus Unified Monthly Program meets the first Wednesday of each month during the school year.  Lutheran Lakeside camp provides the programming, thanks in part by the Elaine B. endowment grant. Bible stories, games, crafts, two service projects (making tie blankets and providing a bag of goodies for the elderly).  Volunteers assisted Lutheran Lakeside with the activities.  Rides were provided if needed.  This is the second year Trinity has held the program, and we hope to continue in the future.

Youth Group

The youth have had a wonderful year. Our youth group has doubled in size with adding some of the 8th grade confirmands to our night. They have added a whole new dynamic and it has been a blessing to have them as part of the group.

Our teens focused on many fundraisers over the past year so they could attend the National Youth Conference in Houston, Texas in June. Some of the fundraisers were the Newlywed game family fun night, the summer garage sale, and the pasta church meal.

The National Youth Conference was an amazing event. Over 30,000 teens and youth leaders attended.  Our youth had a week full of faith building activities. They were able to hear from top Christian artists and speakers and develop relationships with other Lutheran teens around the United States. We look forward to going to the next National Youth Conference in Minneapolis, MN in 2021.

We also spread Christmas cheer to the elderly by Christmas Caroling at the Estherville nursing home. We felt so blessed to have a record number of kids and parents this year.

Water balloon fights and a Bonfire devotion were some of the favorite summer time Wednesday night fun.

We spent many Wednesday evenings hanging out on the youth group couch going over teen devotions and talking about our “Peak” and “Pit” for the week.

Our youth also enjoyed having Youth Church Services once a month last year. Youth Skits, Contemporary Christian Music and delivering the sermon were some of the favorite things.
